The flight from Chengdu to Lhasa takes about 2 hour and 15 minutes in normal circumstances, which makes the shortest journey to Tibet by air among all flights from China mainland to Lhasa. It is only 1261 kilometers between Chengdu and Lhasa, which are in two neighboring provinces, Sichuan and Tibet. Meanwhile, the Chengdu to Lhasa flights are the most frequent, departing for a dozen of times every day.

If you plan to get to Lhasa from Chengdu, it is recommended to take the flight, since it is the most convenient way. The train will take a detour around the mountains to join in the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in the north, making it run for more than 30 hours in total. While the overland route will pass some of the most dangerous terrains in the world, along the famed G318 National Highway.

There are both non-stop flights from Beijing to Lhasa directly, and indirect flights to Lhasa with stopovers in Chengdu, Xi’an, or Xining. The non-stop flights from Beijing to Lhasa can depart at most for three times a day, and take about 4.5 hours. The flying distance is around 3000 kilometers.

The indirect flights allow tourists to have more choices on flexible schedule, and pay much less for the total air tickets, compared to the non-stop one. It may stop over for 2 to 8 hours on the way, depending on different flights. The flight route from Beijing to Lhasa will cross provinces as Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, before arrive in Tibet, as it goes all the way to southwest.

Recently, there is no non-stop flight from Shanghai to Lhasa. The direct flight to Tibet from Shanghai usually takes more than 6 hours with a stopover in Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, etc. From Shanghai to Lhasa, it is 1806 kilometers by air distance. The flight will pass Anhui Province, Hubei Province, Chongqing Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province before the region of Tibet.

Tourists on Shanghai to Lhasa flight will cross plains in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, and Sichuan Basin and Tibetan Plateau, rising from sea level to the height of around 3650 meters. It is a convenient way to get to Lhasa from Shanghai by air.

Everyday, there are just a few flights to Tibet from Guangzhou with stopovers in Chengdu, Chongqing, etc. Usually the Guangzhou-Lhasa flight departs in the morning at 8:30, and the return flight from Lhasa to Guangzhou departs in the afternoon. It takes about 6 hours for a one-way flight ride.

To take a connecting flight from Guangzhou to Lhasa, one can choose to stop at Chengdu. As it mentioned above, Chengdu offers the most frequent flights to Lhasa, and the city is right on the air route from Guangzhou to Tibet. Besides, one can also fly to Kunming firstly and then take the flight from Kunming to Lhasa.

Xi’an is in the center and north of China, to the northeast of Lhasa. There are six non-stop flights departing from Xi’an to Lhasa every day. It takes about 2 hour and 50 minutes for the flight ride. If taking the connecting flight, it will be more than 4.5 hours.

Owing to the advantageous location, Xi’an can serve as the transfer stop for tourists getting to Tibet from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. It is convenient to fly or take trains to Xi’an from these cities. Tourists can also tour around the ancient capital city for a couple of days, before continuing to fly to Lhasa from Xi’an.

Chongqing is quite close to Chengdu, and offers quite a few daily flights to Lhasa. The flight from Chongqing to Lhasa takes about 2 hour and 40 minutes, crossing Sichuan on the way. Similar to Chengdu, tourists getting to Lhasa from Chongqing is recommended to take the flight as the transportation.

The earliest flight from Chongqing to Lhasa departs at 6:00 am, and arrives in Lhasa at 9:00 am. And until late afternoon, the last flight of the day depart at 15:10 pm. Operating airlines include Tibetan Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, West Air, Xiamen Airlines etc.

Kunming is located in Yunnan, one of the neighboring provinces to Tibet, to the southwest of the plateau. Generally, there are two or three daily flights flying directly from Kunming to Lhasa, taking about 2 hour and 45 minutes. And the connecting flights will take more than 4 hours. Some direct flights will stop in Lijiang, a city in northwest of Yunnan, for a while on the way.

Since there is no train between Kunming and Lhasa, the flight naturally gains the priority for transportation. The overland route is a tough choice for many, since it goes along the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, crossing the mighty mountains, large gorges, winding forwards to Tibetan Plateau. Besides, from Yunnan to Tibet, one can also take a flight departing from Lijiang or Shangri-La, two being popular tourism cities.

Actually, there is no direct flight from Hong Kong to Lhasa at present. One need to take a connecting flight to Lhasa from Hong Kong, with one or more stops on the way. Tourists can first fly from Hong Kong to Chengdu, Chongqing or Xi’an, and then fly to Lhasa from there.

There are five daily flights to Chengdu from Hong Kong every day, three flights to Chongqing, and two flights to Xi’an. It will wait for several hours before taking the connecting flights to Lhasa from the transiting city.

The flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa is the only international flight to Tibet. It takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes by non-stop flight. The non-stop flight leaves every day in the morning, and will cross the lofty Himalayan mountains and massive Tibetan Plateau to fly eastwards to Lhasa. If lucky, one could also see the peak of Mount Everest from the airplane window.
