Standing on the island in the middle of the lake is a Nyingmapa temple with a history of more than 1500 years. Dense and serene forests surround the temple, seemingly guarding this jade-like lake with utmost solemnity. The ancient temple on the lake's heart brings Draksum Tso into profound historical contemplation, while the backdrop of two 5,500-meter-high snow-capped mountains creates an incredibly stunning and awe-inspiring vista.

Day 5: Lhasa Tour: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Street

Start the morning from the Potala Palace, a golden feather upon the roof of the world, which Tibetans proudly claim to be the prime miracle since the creation of this world. It was put into use since the 7th century by the 33rd great king of Tibet. The most valuable collections of Potala Palace are the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave of the 33rd great king of Tibet.

In the afternoon, you will head to the Jokhang Temple. It is the center of Tibetan Buddhism and the sacred land of Buddhist followers, where innumerable pilgrims come for worship every day. Inside, you can see the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve, which is the most venerated object in Tibetan Buddhism.

Later, we will take leisurely strolls, meandering through Barkhor Street's handcraft market, carefully selecting souvenirs. Or wander aimlessly, discovering a cozy teahouse along the way. Find a seat by the window, savor a cup of tea, and indulge in contemplation.

Warm Tips:
The tickets for the Potala Palace are sold on a pre-purchase basis and come with specified visiting times. We will flexibly adjust the itinerary based on the actual reserved visiting time. This dazzling lake is usually first spotted from the summit of Gambala Mountain (4700m). It sits several hundred meters below the road and curves like a coiling scorpion, with the massive Mt. Noijin Kangsang (7191m) visible in the distance.

Next, you'll pass by the 5,010m high Karola Glacier before heading to Gyantse. This glacier sits right by the roadside, resembling a serene maiden grooming herself while gazing from afar at the majestic snow-capped mountains.

Upon arrival in Gyantse, you'll visit Pelkor Monastery and the splendid Kumbum Stupa (100-Thousand-Buddha Pagoda) nearby, both built in the 15th century and located in the northwestern edge of Gyantse.

Early in the morning, we set off towards Everest Base Camp, passing through Lhatse, and crossing two mountain passes, Tsola Pass (4600 meters) and Gyatsola Pass (5248 meters). After that, we officially enter the Mt. Everest National Nature Reserve.

Keep your eyes wide open and adjust your sight to take in the majestic views of the Himalayas at Gawula Pass! If it is in clear weather, you can have a glimpse of 4 mountains which is 8000m high or more, such as Mt. Lhotse (8516m), Mt. Everest (8848m), Mt. Qowowuyag (8201m), Mt Mayalu (8463m).

The zigzagging mountain road leads us swiftly forward, and soon we arrive at the tent area of Everest Base Camp. At sunset, the golden sunlight blankets the camp, gradually fading as the sun sinks behind the mountains. Night falls, and the deep black sky is studded with twinkling stars. A brilliant Milky Way stretches across the sky, leaving joyous people under the stars—some chatting in pairs, some lost in their own thoughts. The most beautiful moments are captured here.

Warm Tips:
Everest Base Camp sits at an altitude of 5200 meters, and it's common to experience headaches and difficulty sleeping at night due to altitude. This is a normal occurrence, so there's no need to panic. Continue to take it slow, relax, and savor the beauty of Everest. The symptoms will gradually ease.

Note:
According to the announcement from the Everest area, on this itinerary, tourists can reach Rongbuk Monastery at the highest point. The actual situation depends on the area's announcement. Rongbuk Monastery is the best spot for viewing and photographing Everest.

Stay overnight at tent guest house.

If you wish, you can meditate and experience unparalleled tranquility and harmony there. Alternatively, interact with monks and nuns with the help of a guide to learn more about their unique spiritual life.

The temperature can get bitterly cold in the early morning. Make sure to wear enough clothing, such as your down jacket, scarf, and mittens, to protect yourself from the extreme cold.

Finally, we jump into our tour vehicle and bid farewell to the world’s highest peak through the rearview mirror of the van. By following the zigzag roads on the Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway, we head back to Shigatse.

At Tashilhunpo Monastery, you'll have the opportunity to admire one of the world's largest copper Buddha statues, the towering 28-meter-tall 'Jampa' (Maitreya Buddha statue). This magnificent statue serves not only as a symbol of faith but also as a testament to culture and history.

After that, we'll begin our journey back to Lhasa.
