More Information about Chengdu to Lhasa Flight

  • Why Take a Flight to Lhasa from Chengdu?

One of the main reasons is that flights from Chengdu to Lhasa are both frequent and flexible. Chengdu offers more direct flights to Lhasa than any other city in mainland China, with over a dozen departures daily. This gives travelers the flexibility to choose a morning, afternoon, or evening flight, depending on their schedule.

Another major advantage is the short flight duration. A direct flight from Chengdu to Lhasa takes only about 2.5 hours, while flights from cities such as Beijing and Shanghai typically take 4 to 7 hours. Compared with the Tibet train from Chengdu to Lhasa, which requires about 34.5 hours, flying from Chengdu is a much faster option.

In addition, Chengdu serves as an excellent gateway to Tibet. The city is well connected to international destinations, with direct flights from cities such as Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Bangkok, and Seoul. Travelers can also reach Chengdu easily from major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong, via frequent domestic flights and high-speed rail services.

  • How Much is the Chengdu to Lhasa Flight Cost? Can I Get a Discount?

The cost of a flight from Chengdu to Lhasa can vary considerably depending on the travel season, booking time, and airline. During the peak travel season from May to October, one-way fares typically range from $150 to $350 per person. In the low season, however, tickets can be found for as little as $90 to $170.

To secure the best fares, it is advisable to book your flight as early as possible, as ticket prices often increase significantly closer to the departure date. If your travel dates are flexible, consider visiting Tibet during the low season when airfare is generally lower. It is also wise to avoid major travel periods, such as National Day holidays and the summer vacation season, when demand and prices are usually at their highest.

  • Will I Suffer from Altitude Sickness When Taking a Flight to Lhasa from Chengdu?

Since Chengdu sits at an elevation of about 500 meters while Lhasa is located at 3,650 meters above sea level, some travelers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness after arriving in Tibet. The rapid increase in altitude during the short 2.5-hour flight gives your body little time to adjust. However, most visitors can acclimatize well by taking a few simple precautions.

Before your trip, try to get enough rest and avoid excessive physical exertion. After arriving in Lhasa, take it easy for the first one or two days, avoid strenuous activities, and stay well hydrated. It is also recommended to avoid alcohol and get plenty of sleep. Spending a couple of days in Lhasa before traveling to higher-altitude destinations can help your body adapt more comfortably.

  • What Documents are Required to Take the Chengdu to Lhasa Flight?

To take a flight from Chengdu to Lhasa, you must first obtain a Chinese visa and a Tibet Travel Permit. The good news is that if you are from a country covered by China's visa-free policy, such as Singapore, Australia, France, Germany, or Malaysia, you only need to obtain the Tibet Travel Permit.

The Tibet Travel Permit can only be arranged through an authorized Tibet travel agency. As a leading Tibet tour operator with years of experience, we can apply for your Tibet Travel Permit on your behalf and deliver it to your hotel in Chengdu before your departure. To ensure enough processing time, we recommend contacting us at least 20 days in advance.

If you plan to travel beyond Lhasa to destinations such as Shigatse, Mount Everest, or Mount Kailash, you will also need an Aliens' Travel Permit and a Military Permit. These additional permits are not required for boarding a flight to Tibet. Your Tibet guide will help you obtain them after you arrive in Tibet.

  • Where is Chengdu Airport and How to Get There for Boarding?

Chengdu has two major airports: Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU). Both airports operate daily flights to Lhasa.

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is located about 16 km southwest of downtown Chengdu. It has two terminals, T1 and T2, which are about a 10-minute walk apart. To reach the airport, you can take Chengdu Metro Line 10, or travel by taxi or Didi, which usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes from the city center.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is a newer airport located about 50 km southeast of downtown Chengdu. Metro Lines 18 and 19 currently provide direct access to the airport, with travel times from downtown as fast as 30 minutes. If you are transferring from Shuangliu Airport, Metro Line 19 takes about 1 hour.

Since the two airports are located in different directions and are far apart, it is important to double-check your departure airport before traveling. We recommend arriving at the correct airport at least 2 to 2.5 hours before departure to allow enough time for check-in, security checks, and boarding.

  • How to Get to My Hotel After Arriving at Lhasa Airport?

Lhasa Gonggar International Airport is located about 60 km southwest of downtown Lhasa. It is one of the highest airports in the world and the only international airport in Tibet.

You can take the airport shuttle bus from the airport to downtown Lhasa. The journey takes about 1.5 hours and costs CNY 30 per person for a one-way trip. The final stop is the Civil Aviation Bureau Station, which is conveniently located near the Potala Palace.

For added convenience, we provide a free airport transfer service for travelers who book their Tibet tour with us. Your local guide will meet you at the airport upon arrival and transfer you directly to your hotel in Lhasa by private vehicle, ensuring a smooth start to your Tibet journey.
