Daily Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu to Rasuwa Gadi

In the morning, our Kathmandu staff will escort you onto a jeep bound for the Nepal-China border, Rasuwa Gadi. The distance from Kathmandu to Rasuwa Gadi is approximately 130 kilometers and usually takes about 7 hours.

Rasuwa Gadi provides basic hotel accommodations and breakfast. We'll stay here, awaiting entry into Tibet, China, the following day.

The road from Kathmandu to the border is quite bumpy, but the scenery almost makes you forget the rough journey. Along the way, you'll see numerous magnificent snow-capped mountains along the southern foothills of the Himalayas. These mountains sit atop vast forests, towering into the sky.

As the jeep passes through Langtang National Park, you'll encounter a particularly rugged section of the road, with the vehicle swaying wildly on muddy terrain. However, the exciting part is the possibility of encountering some interesting wildlife along the way.

Stay overnight in Rasuwa Gadi.

Warm Tips:
Before heading to the China-Nepal border, please visit our office in Kathmandu at least 3 business days in advance. Submit your passport and pay the visa and service fees. Our Kathmandu staff will assist you in processing your Chinese Group Visa.

Accmodation:

Overnight in Rasuwa Gadi

Day 2: Rasuwa Gadi to Gyirong

In the morning, our Nepal border staff will escort you into Tibet to meet your Tibetan guide. This marks your first day in Tibet, and it's crucial to acclimate to the high altitude before heading to higher areas. Therefore, you'll spend a day in Gyirong Town at an altitude of 2800 meters, adjusting to the plateau environment while exploring the beautiful Gyirong Valley.

Gyirong Valley, nestled on the edge of the Himalayan forests and snow-capped mountains, offers a paradise where you can admire dense forests, tranquil villages, and stunning snow peaks towering above the trees. It's been acclaimed as the "most beautiful valley in the world" by the British explorer Howard-Bury in “Mount Everest: The Reconnaissance.” Here, you will hike to visit the village of the Tibetan Sherpa, immersing yourselves in its snowy mountain landscapes and lush forests.

Stay overnight in Gyirong.

Day 3: Gyirong - Everest Base Camp - Tingri

After breakfast, you'll depart from Gyirong Port and ascend towards areas above 4500 meters, ultimately reaching Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5200 meters. This 380-kilometer journey offers a varied landscape, transitioning from low valleys to high plateaus.

Initially, you'll be enchanted by forests, waterfalls, and seemingly bottomless gorges before traversing the Kong Tang Lamu Mountain Pass (5236 meters) into the plateau. Along the way, you'll pass by Shishapangma Peak (8027 meters) and the serene Lake Paiku Tso, witnessing their tranquil and harmonious beauty.

Continuing into the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve, you'll come across Gawula Pass (5198m), acclaimed as one of the world's most stunning Everest viewing platforms, offering a panoramic Himalayan view. Here, you'll witness the breathtaking lineup of the five highest peaks in the Himalayan range, all towering above 8000 meters.

Upon reaching Everest Base Camp, the second viewpoint of Mount Everest, you'll admire the world's highest peak and visit the world's highest monastery, Rongbuk Monastery.

After that, you'll travel to Tingri County (4300 meters). (Considering the rapid ascent from low altitudes to over 5000 meters, we've chosen to overnight in lower Tingri to ensure your travel safety and prevent altitude sickness.)

In the afternoon, you will reach Shigatse, and then explore the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the residence of the Panchen Lama and also the largest monastery in Shigatse. This expansive monastery occupies the hillside, housing the world's largest statue of Maitreya Buddha, serving as the spiritual heart of Shigatse. You can see monks, wearing yellow hats and red robes, walking through the temple. If you are lucky, you will also see a Dharma ceremony held in the temple.

Then, you will pass by the Karola Glacier (5100m). Positioned right by the roadside, it resembles a serene maiden grooming herself while gazing from afar at the majestic snow-capped mountains.

The final stop will be at Yamdrok Lake, one of the three holiest lakes in Tibet. This stunning lake unveils its beauty from the Gambala Mountain Pass (4790m), curving like a blue ribbon, while the towering Mt. Noijin Kangsang (7191m) can be seen in the distance. As you descend to the lakeshore, explore various viewpoints offering intimate encounters with the lake's shoreline. In the afternoon, the tour proceeds to Sera Monastery, established in 1419 and long regarded as a significant Buddhist seminary. Once you've explored the grandeur of the Potala Palace, your next stop will be Longwangtan Park nestled at its base. This tranquil spot offers a unique vantage point to admire the majestic Potala Palace and partake in traditional Tibetan cultural experiences.

In the afternoon, you'll head to the sacred Jokhang Temple—the heart of Tibetan faith and life. Within the temple resides the rare and revered 12-year-old statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, an image so lifelike that it resembles seeing the Buddha in person. Kathmandu to Lhasa Trip Notes

  • 1. When is the deadline to book this 8-day Kathmandu to Lhasa Small Group Tour?

To ensure a seamless trip, it is recommended to book your Tibet tour at least 15-20 days before the departure date.

Certainly, booking your tour 1-2 months or earlier in advance will assist us in arranging your Tibet Travel Permit and other necessary documents, as well as securing accommodations. Additionally, early bookings may qualify for early-bird discounts. This arrangement facilitates better preparation and a more relaxed journey.

  • 2. What travel documents are required for the overland trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa?

For foreign tourists taking the Kathmandu to Lhasa overland trip, you will first need to obtain the Tibet Travel Permit and Chinese Group Visa.

The Tibet Travel Permit is obtained by us using a scanned copy of your passport in advance of your trip. Typically, processing takes 15-20 days. It's recommended to book well in advance to ensure your permit is ready for your departure date.

The Chinese Group Visa, unlike what you might expect, is a unique form of single-entry Chinese Visa. This visa can exclusively be processed through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, and individual applications are not accepted. We'll assist you in applying for it on your behalf. The standard processing time is usually three working days, so it's recommended to be in Nepal at least 3 days before your intended travel date.

Besides, for traveling to the “unopened” areas of Tibet, like Everest Base Camp during this tour, you will also need to obtain Alien’s Travel Permit. But no worries. We will help to apply for all these travel documents in advance of your trip on your behalf.

  • 3. When is the best time to take a Kathmandu to Lhasa overland tour?

The best time for a Kathmandu to Lhasa overland tour is typically from April to mid-June and from September to November, offering favorable weather and stunning Himalayan views.

Tibet experiences summer rain mostly at night, with clear and comfortable days. If you don't mind occasional rain during the drive and prefer warmer weather, summer is suitable for the tour. However, be cautious near the Gyirong border due to potential landslides and heavy rain making roads hazardous.

Winter, from November to early February, is a budget-friendly option with fewer crowds and lower expenses at attractions. Also, visiting Tibet during winter showcases beautiful snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes, presenting breathtaking landscapes.

  • 4. How is the road condition from Kathmandu to Lhasa?

The road from Kathmandu to Lhasa is surprisingly good due to the growth in Tibet's tourism and economic development. Most of the route consists of well-paved asphalt roads suitable for regular vehicles. The smooth road covers about 820 km from Gyirong Port to Lhasa.

Only for the first section from Kathmandu to Gyirong, the road spans around 180 kilometers and becomes dusty and bumpy. However, the scenery along this stretch is stunning. Additionally, we provide seasoned drivers with years of experience driving in Tibet to ensure your overland trip is as comfortable as possible.

  • 5. Are there instances when Mount Everest might not be visible on the way from Kathmandu to Lhasa?

Due to factors like high altitude and ever-changing weather, there might be times when Mount Everest isn't visible during the visit. However, this isn't a common occurrence.

To increase the likelihood of seeing Mount Everest, it's best to plan your visit to Everest Base Camp during the stable weather seasons of spring and autumn. Even if there's rain, showers around Mount Everest tend to pass quickly. Of course, you can always reach out to our experienced travel advisors before your trip to get insights into Mount Everest's weather conditions. To maximize your chance of spotting Mount Everest, our itinerary provides 3 opportunities to witness its beauty; at least one should offer a clear view.

Furthermore, keeping a positive mindset and appreciating the diverse beauty of Tibet, not solely focused on Mount Everest, is important. Even if you miss seeing Mount Everest, the surrounding breathtaking natural scenery and unique plateau landscapes will still captivate you. The overland journey across the Himalayas is about more than Mount Everest; it an adventure embracing natural marvels and the mesmerizing plateau scenery.

  • 6. What to pack for traveling overland from Kathmandu to Lhasa?

    1) Clothing: Upper garments can include thick underwear (or thermal underwear), a sweater/fleece, and a thick down jacket (thick winter jacket). Lower wear can consist of windproof pants and warm thermal leggings. Footwear can be non-slip sports shoes or hiking boots. Additionally, scarves, gloves, and hats are essential. Layering clothing is advisable for adjusting to temperature changes.

    2) Personal items: Skincare products like facial cleanser, moisturizer, facial masks, body lotion, lip balm, and sunscreen. Personal hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, and towels. Shampoo and shower products can be selectively packed based on personal needs. Sunglasses are a must due to Tibet's strong sunlight. Given the long driving trip, carrying a U-shaped pillow for comfort during long journeys is recommended. Also, prepare a thermal flask to ensure access to hot water anytime.

    3) Common medications: Adhesive bandages, motion sickness medicine, cold medicine, gastrointestinal medicine, anti-inflammatory drugs, eye drops, altitude sickness medication, and other commonly used medications should be carried for emergencies. (Always follow medical advice and avoid misuse of medication.)

    4) Electronic devices: Bring chargers, power banks, cameras, earphones, or other electronic devices as per personal requirements.

    5) Small amounts of cash and bank cards: Although mobile payment methods are becoming more common in Tibet, there might still be instances in remote areas where cash is needed. It's advisable to carry a small amount of cash and at least one bank card.
