Tibet Family Tour FAQs and Travel Tips

  • Is there any age limit for children to travel in Tibet?

There is no age limitation for any tourist who travel to Tibet. But considering the high altitude and relatively harsh weather of the plateau, children who are too young (under the age of 4 or 5) will be much vulnerable against health risks. Long drives, which is usually required during a long journey to EBC or remote regions of Tibet, will also cause pressure to young children as well. But the situation will vary from child to child. In fact, last year we have received two kids at 3 and 5 years old, who travelled happily and safely with their parents. Therefore, it is better to consult your doctor before going to Tibet.

  • When is the best time to take a family tour in Tibet?

The best time to visit Tibet for a family tour is from May to October, when the weather is warm and comfortable in most regions of the land. It is also more likely to appreciate the most stunning landscape on the plateau, such as blooming flowers and flowing steam in spring, lush forest and green prairie with herding nomads in summer, blue sky and clear mountain views in autumn etc. While, if you only plan to visit Lhasa and its surrounding, winter is also a good season, since it is warm during this time. And travelling to Tibet in winter can also cut down the cost to a great degree.

  • What destinations should I choose for my family tour in Tibet?

If you want to let your children learn about the unique Tibetan culture, then you should not miss the major cultural cities, including Lhasa, Shigatse, Tsedang etc., Located in relatively lower altitude, these cities boast splendid Tibetan monasteries and Buddhist architectures, like the grand Potala Palace, revered Jokhang Temple and many more.

If your family are fond of natural scenery, then it is suggested to visit the holy Namtso Lake, which is only 112 km away from Lhasa. There you can see snow-capped mountains and turquoise lake water, or even get a glimpse of the nomad life. With breathtaking scenery, it is surely a pleasant family trip in Tibet. Similarly, Yamdrok Lake, one of the three largest lakes in Tibet, is also a good destination, as there is well-paved highway leading there from Lhasa.

There are also more awesome destinations to explore across the vast Tibet Plateau. While some faraway or mountainous places will be not such friendly for family trips. It is recommended to consult us if you are not sure whether the destination is too far, how is the accommodation and dining etc.

  • Are there some family-friendly activities in Tibet?

Unlike other destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai or Chengdu, there is no such place for entertainment in Tibet, like Disney land or ocean park, due to its geological and economic conditions. But one can have a totally different experience in Tibet.

Instead of some traditional outdoor activities your family may have before, you can learn the Buddhism culture, or have a day spent with a local Tibetan family, or learn to make handcrafts in a workshop, or spend overnight in the tent at the tranquil and beautiful Namtso Lake etc. Besides, there are trekking trails suitable for a family trip. We can help to arrange the family-friendly activities according to your needs, as long as it can be realized. Just contact us for details.

  • What are the essential packing list for a family tour in Tibet?

Tibet's weather is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, intense UV radiation from prolonged sunshine, and dry air. To prepare, it's advisable to pack warm headwear like beanies for chilly winds and dress in layers to adjust to varying temperatures.

Recommended clothing includes thermal underwear, long-sleeve shirts, jackets, windbreakers, and down jackets. Even in summer, these items are necessary for trips to locations like Everest Base Camp (EBC) or Namtso. Additionally, bring comfortable shoes suitable for walking and hiking.

For sun protection, pack sunglasses, trekking hats, and lip balms. Don't forget toiletries and personal medications such as cold relief, motion sickness, anti-diarrhea pills, mountain sickness, and eye drops.

Remember to bring camera equipment with extra batteries and memory cards for capturing memorable moments. Lastly, ensure you have crucial travel documents, including your passport and Tibet travel permit.

  • Is altitude sickness more common in the elderly and children?

Contrary to popular belief, there's no scientific evidence suggesting that the elderly or young children are more prone to altitude sickness. Instead, susceptibility largely depends on genetic factors and how well one acclimatizes to the Tibetan Plateau.

To mitigate risks, it's crucial to avoid catching a cold before traveling to Tibet and allow ample time for rest and acclimatization upon arrival in Lhasa. Rushing to visit attractions should be avoided, as should sudden changes in altitude in your itinerary. Consulting with a pharmacist or doctor for altitude sickness medication beforehand is advisable.

Rest assured, our local guides will monitor your health closely and provide timely assistance and advice throughout your stay in Tibet.
