Overview & Highlights of This Journey

Experience both Lhasa’s cultural heart and the quieter rhythm of Tibetan countryside life through monasteries, village stays, local meals, and a rural walk.

This 6-day private cultural journey is designed for travelers who want to experience both the classic culture of Lhasa and a more rural side of Tibetan life beyond the city.

You’ll begin in Lhasa, exploring Drepung and Sera Monasteries, the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor, where your local Tibetan guide introduces monastic learning, pilgrimage traditions, and everyday religious life.

We then take you beyond the city to Ganden Monastery, where you can walk the scenic Ganden kora and experience another important side of Tibetan Buddhist tradition. From there, continue into the countryside to Trubshi Village, where you’ll spend the night, meet local residents, share dinner, and experience the quieter surroundings of a Tibetan village.

Rather than treating the trek as a purely outdoor activity, your guide helps you understand how the landscape connects with local farming, village routines, and everyday life.

Journey from Lhasa to Ganden and Trubshi Village

Leave Lhasa in the morning and travel to Ganden Monastery, one of the three great Gelug monasteries of Tibet and closely associated with Tsongkhapa, who founded it in 1409.

With your local Tibetan guide, explore the monastery and learn about its role in the Gelug tradition. You can also walk part or all of the Ganden kora, a pilgrimage route around the monastery that passes prayer flags, sacred sites, and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valley and mountain landscape.

After the visit, continue into the countryside to Trubshi Village, a Tibetan village set at around 3,400 meters. Arriving here marks a clear change in the journey, from Lhasa’s monasteries and pilgrimage sites to the quieter rhythms of rural Tibetan life.

Trubshi is also known as one of the starting points of the classic Ganden–Samye trekking route, but today’s walk is much easier and designed as a relaxed way to experience the village environment rather than a long-distance trek.

As you walk, your local Tibetan guide will help you notice the small details of countryside life and explain how the surrounding landscape connects with local farming, daily routines, and village traditions.

If you are interested, horse or yak riding may also be available locally, depending on conditions and arrangements. Any additional cost can be discussed directly with the local providers.

Around midday, enjoy lunch with a local Tibetan family before saying goodbye to the village and driving back to Lhasa.

You will usually arrive in Lhasa in the afternoon. The rest of the day is free to relax at your hotel or enjoy some easy personal time in the city.

FAQs about This Journey

  • How Is This Journey Different from a Classic Lhasa Culture Tour?

A classic Lhasa culture tour usually focuses on the city’s major landmarks. On this journey, you’ll still experience those essential places, but then we take you beyond Lhasa into the countryside for a closer look at village life and rural Tibetan culture.

After visiting Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Sera and Drepung Monasteries, you’ll continue to Ganden Monastery and walk part of its scenic Ganden kora before traveling on to Trubshi Village.

Here, the pace slows down. You’ll stay overnight in the village, share meals with local families, walk through fields and valleys, and see how daily life changes once you leave the city behind.

That makes this journey a good choice if you want to experience both the cultural heart of Lhasa and a more personal, rural side of Tibetan life, rather than spending the whole trip in the city.

  • What Is It Like to Stay Overnight in Trubshi Village?

Staying overnight in Trubshi Village lets you experience a much quieter side of Tibetan life than you would in Lhasa.

The accommodation is simple and local rather than hotel-style, but it is arranged to provide a comfortable place to rest for the night. Facilities may be more basic than those in Lhasa, which is part of the experience of staying in a rural Tibetan village.

After arriving, you can spend time around the village, see traditional homes and fields, and enjoy dinner with local villagers. As evening comes, the surroundings become peaceful, with open countryside, mountain views, and a slower village rhythm.

In the morning, you’ll wake up surrounded by fields, village homes, and open countryside before beginning your walk around Trubshi.

  • What Can I Experience with Local Tibetan Families in Trubshi?

In Trubshi, you’ll spend time with local Tibetan families and experience countryside life in a more personal way.

You’ll share dinner with local villagers on Day 4 and enjoy lunch with a Tibetan family on Day 5. Over tea and meals, you can talk with your hosts about daily routines, local food, farming, family customs, and life in the village.

With your Tibetan guide helping with introductions and translation, you can ask questions and better understand the small details of rural Tibetan life that are easy to miss on a normal sightseeing tour.

Depending on the family, season, and local arrangements, you may also have the chance to see or join simple household or farming activities during your stay.

  • What Is the Cultural Walk around Trubshi Village Like?

The walk around Trubshi Village is a light and relaxed countryside walk, designed to help you experience rural Tibetan life more closely.

You’ll follow village paths through fields and open countryside with your local Tibetan guide explaining the farming landscape, local routines, and how people in the village live and work with the surrounding environment.

The walk is less about covering distance and more about experiencing the countryside on foot, passing fields, village homes, and working landscapes while your guide explains how rural life is shaped by the surroundings.

The pace is gentle, so it is suitable for travelers who want to combine light outdoor activity with a deeper look at Tibetan countryside culture.

  • Why Is Ganden Monastery Included in This Countryside Journey?

We include Ganden Monastery because it creates a natural transition from Lhasa’s urban cultural experience into the quieter countryside around Trubshi.

Ganden is one of Tibet’s great Gelug monasteries and is closely associated with Tsongkhapa, who founded it in 1409. With your guide, you’ll explore the monastery and learn about its religious importance before walking part or all of the Ganden kora.

The kora is an important part of the experience. As you follow the pilgrimage path around the monastery, you’ll pass prayer flags, sacred sites, and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valleys and mountains.

From Ganden, the journey continues directly into Trubshi Village, so the day connects monastic tradition, pilgrimage, sacred landscape, and rural village life in one continuous experience.

  • Is This Journey Suitable for Travelers Who Want Both Culture and Light Outdoor Activity?

Yes. This journey is a good fit if you want to combine cultural discovery with gentle outdoor experiences rather than spend the whole trip sightseeing in the city.

After exploring Lhasa, you’ll continue to Ganden Monastery and Trubshi Village, where the Ganden kora and countryside walk add mountain views, village paths, fields, and rural life to the cultural experience.

The walking is light and relaxed rather than demanding, making this journey ideal for travelers who enjoy being outdoors while keeping culture, local interaction, and village life at the heart of the trip.

  • What Can I Learn About Monastic Life at Drepung and Sera?

At Drepung and Sera Monasteries, you’ll see how Tibetan Buddhism is lived and studied as part of daily monastic life.

At Drepung, your guide will introduce the monastery’s main halls and traditional monastic colleges, helping you understand how monks study, live, and follow their daily routines.

At Sera, you’ll watch the famous monk debates, where monks use questions, reasoning, handclaps, and gestures as part of their Buddhist education. Your guide will explain what is happening so the debate feels meaningful rather than simply dramatic.

Together, the two monasteries give you a closer look at monastic study, daily routines, and religious practice, adding another layer to the journey before you continue into the countryside.

  • What Is It Like to Walk the Barkhor Kora with Local Pilgrims?

Walking the Barkhor kora is one of the best ways to experience Lhasa’s living pilgrimage culture.

You’ll follow the traditional clockwise route around Jokhang Temple alongside local pilgrims, some spinning prayer wheels, reciting mantras, or making prostrations as they move through the old town.

With your Tibetan guide explaining the customs and meaning behind what you see, the walk becomes more than a sightseeing route. You can better understand how pilgrimage remains part of everyday religious life in Lhasa.

It is a simple but very immersive experience, because you are not just visiting a sacred site, you are moving through it in the same direction and rhythm as local pilgrims.
