  The 4-day Lhasa tour focuses on the city’s essential cultural highlights, including the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, and Barkhor.

  This 6-day journey includes all of those classic experiences, but gives you two extra days to slow down and enjoy more immersive, hands-on cultural experiences. You will step inside a local Tibetan home to learn about family traditions, take part in hands-on workshops like Thangka painting and incense making, and explore a bustling local market with your guide.

  These are the kinds of experiences you would rarely find on a standard sightseeing tour. Instead of simply seeing Lhasa’s landmarks, you’ll have more time to meet local people, take part in everyday traditions, and experience Tibetan culture through real life and traditional skills.

• Is the Tibetan Family Visit on Day 4 Authentic, or Is It a Staged Tourist Experience?

  The family visit is designed as a real, small-scale cultural exchange rather than a staged performance.

  Our local team and guides are native Tibetans, and their families and friends are part of local Tibetan communities. This gives us strong local connections and allows us to arrange visits with real Tibetan families rather than staged tourist experiences.

  During the visit, you’ll sit down for tea and conversation, learn about family routines, food, and household traditions, and, depending on local arrangements, may take part in simple activities such as making tsampa or preparing traditional snacks.

  Your guide will help with communication throughout, so you can ask questions and better understand the family’s daily life. Because this is a genuine home visit, the exact details may vary slightly from one family to another.

• Do I Need Any Art Experience for the Thangka Painting and Incense-Making Workshops?

  No prior art or craft experience is needed. These workshops are designed for complete beginners and travelers, so the activities are simple, guided, and easy to follow.

  Professional Tibetan monks and artists may spend years studying traditional iconography and techniques, but your workshop is a much lighter introduction. The artisan will guide you step by step as you try a simple Thangka motif or take part in basic incense-making steps such as grinding, blending, and shaping.

  The activities are also easy for most children to join, as long as they are old enough to follow simple instructions and enjoy hands-on activities. The aim is not to master the craft, but to have a relaxed first experience of Tibetan traditional skills.

• What Will I Learn About Tibetan Culture Through the Craft Workshops?

  Through the hands-on Thangka painting and incense-making workshops on Day 5, you’ll get to experience Tibetan culture in a more personal way—not just by watching, but by trying the crafts yourself.

  • Discover the Meaning Behind Thangka Art: With guidance from an experienced artisan, you’ll learn how traditional Thangka paintings are carefully planned using geometric proportions, grid systems, colors, and Buddhist symbols. You’ll then try creating a simple motif yourself.
  • Learn How Tibetan Incense Is Made and Used: A local incense maker will introduce you to some of the herbs, botanicals, and aromatic materials traditionally used in Tibetan incense. You’ll also take part in preparing, blending, and shaping the incense while learning how it is used in homes and religious settings.
  • Spend Time with Local Artisans: Working alongside local craftspeople gives you a closer look at the patience, skill, and traditions behind these crafts, and how they continue to be passed down today.

• Will There Be Language Barriers During the Family Visit and Craft Workshops?

  You don’t need to worry about speaking Tibetan. Just as during visits to Lhasa’s major cultural sites, your local Tibetan guide will stay with you throughout the family visit and craft workshops, helping with translation and communication.

  Our guides speak fluent English, and guides in other requested foreign languages can also be arranged when available. During the home visit, your guide can help you chat with the family, ask questions, and understand local customs. During the workshops, they can also explain the artisan’s instructions and the cultural meaning behind the craft.

  It can also be fun to learn a few simple Tibetan greetings, such as “Tashi Delek,” which is a warm way to greet local people and can help create a more natural connection.

• What Can I Experience at the Local Market Beyond Shopping?

  The local market is much more than a place for souvenir shopping—it offers a lively look at food culture, traditional goods, and everyday community life in Lhasa.

  Walk through the market alongside local residents and pilgrims as they shop for fresh produce, highland spices, dried yak meat, butter, Tibetan textiles, and everyday household goods. You may also see religious items such as prayer flags, incense, butter-lamp supplies, and ritual objects, showing how Buddhist traditions remain part of daily life.

  With your Tibetan guide, you can learn about familiar local foods such as tsampa and yak cheese, understand how different ingredients and products are used, and observe people shopping, bargaining, and catching up with neighbors.

  • Dress modestly and speak softly: Inside religious spaces. Avoid pointing directly at sacred objects with one finger.
  • Follow your host’s lead: During family visits, accept tea or snacks politely, and wait to be shown where to sit.
  • Photography is often restricted: Inside prayer halls and sacred chapels, while outdoor areas usually allow photos.
