Welcome to Tibet! Upon arrival, our Tibetan guide will greet you at the airport or train station and present you with a Hada (the traditional Tibetan ceremonial scarf) to wish you good luck!

You'll then be transferred to your hotel in downtown Lhasa by the guide and driver. Along the way, you can enjoy the spectacular scenery of Yarlung Tsangpo River, Lhasa River, and the typical Tibetan villages.

After arriving at the hotel, take some time to rest and acclimate to the high altitude. It's helpful to take it easy for the first few days and remember to stay hydrated by drinking water.

Later in the afternoon or evening, your guide will welcome you with traditional Tibetan gifts, provide travel guidance, and introduce you to the other members of your group.

Stay overnight in Lhasa.

Here, you'll explore the Coqen Hall, where your guide will provide a detailed explanation of the Tibetan Buddhist worldview and narrate the stories of renowned figures in Tibetan Buddhist history.

Additionally, you'll tour the Loseling College (or an equivalent) within Drepung Monastery to understand monks' practices and studies. Exploring their dormitories will offer insight into their daily routines and living conditions.

In the afternoon, the tour proceeds to Sera Monastery, established in 1419 and long regarded as a significant Buddhist seminary. Here, you'll observe the renowned monk debates, a highlight of Sera Monastery. Your guide will provide a comprehensive explanation of how these debates aid monks in acquiring knowledge and advancing through academic degrees.

Lhasa City Trip Notes

  • 1. When is the deadline to book this 4-day Lhasa Small Group Tour?

To ensure a seamless trip, it is recommended to book your Tibet tour at least 15-20 days before the departure date.

Certainly, booking your tour 1-2 months or earlier in advance will assist us in arranging your Tibet Travel Permit and other necessary documents, as well as securing accommodations. Additionally, early bookings may qualify for early-bird discounts. This arrangement facilitates better preparation and a more relaxed journey.

  • 2. What travel documents are required for a trip to Lhasa?

For traveling to Lhasa in Tibet, various tourists require specific travel documents:

    1) Foreign tourists: Passport, Chinese Visa, Tibet Travel Permit, Alien’s Travel Permit
    2) Tourists from Hong Kong and Macau: Home Return Permit, Frontier Pass
    3) Tourists from Taiwan: Mainland Travel Permit (MTP), Tibet Travel Permit, etc.

  • 3. How to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit? How long does it take, and when can I get the permit?

For foreign tourists applying for the Tibet Travel Permit, photos or photocopies of a valid passport and Chinese Visa are needed. Holders of a working visa need to additionally provide a work certificate, while student visa holders require student certification.

However, Taiwanese tourists only need to provide photos or photocopies of Mainland Travel Permit for the Tibet Travel Permit application.

Generally, processing the Tibet Travel Permit takes 7-14 working days. Once the permit is successfully issued, we'll mail it to your address in mainland of China 3-5 days before your departure date, ensuring you have it in hand for your train or flight to Tibet.

  • 4. What is the altitude of Lhasa city? Will I suffer from altitude sickness?

Lhasa sits at an altitude of 3650 meters, making it one of the lower-altitude cities in Tibet, apart from Nyingchi. For first-time visitors to high-altitude areas, the possibility of experiencing altitude sickness exists, but its occurrence varies from person to person.

To minimize the chances of altitude sickness, it's advisable to avoid bathing, especially hair washing, during the initial days in Lhasa, prevent exposure to cold to avoid catching a cold, ensure ample rest, and avoid strenuous exercises or overexertion. Additionally, staying hydrated, eating fresh vegetables and fruits, and refraining from alcohol intake are recommended.

If severe symptoms of altitude sickness such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, or severe headaches occur, it's essential to inform your guide and seek immediate medical attention while accompanied by the guide.

  • 5. When is the best time to visit Lhasa?

The best time to visit Lhasa is from April to October. During this period, the weather is pleasant, with moderate temperatures and high oxygen content, making it the most suitable season for travel. Specifically, the months of April to May and September to October are considered the prime seasons to visit Lhasa.

Even though July to August is the rainy season, it's also the peak tourist season. Rainfall typically occurs in the late evening or at night and generally doesn't affect daytime activities.

Moreover, if you seek an economical trip to Lhasa, consider visiting during winter (November to March of the following year). Despite lower temperatures during winter, the days are mostly sunny, with temperatures staying above 10℃, while nights may drop below freezing, but you'll be back in the hotel's warm room by then.

Winter visits to Tibet benefit from winter tourism policies, offering free entry to many scenic spots, discounts on hotels and flights. Even a 4-day trip to Lhasa during this time is considerably cheaper than in the peak season. Additionally, fewer tourists visit Lhasa during winter, meaning no queues at attractions, resulting in a better overall travel experience.

  • 6. What are the must-try Tibetan food in Lhasa?

Tasting local Tibetan cuisine is an essential activity in Lhasa. The city boasts a rich variety of distinctive foods, including Tibetan sweet tea, Tibetan butter tea, highland barley wine, tsampa (roasted barley flour), yogurt, fried potatoes, potato dumplings, and yak meat buns.

The traditional Tibetan food not only pleases the taste buds but also offers a unique experience of Tibetan culture. There's a saying that adapting to the high-altitude environment is aided by eating as the locals do in Lhasa.

Therefore, don't miss these uniquely Tibetan dishes when visiting Lhasa. After admiring the stunning scenery, satisfying your taste buds with these local flavors will add much delight to your Tibetan journey.

  • 7. When is the best time to schedule a Tibetan costume photography while touring Lhasa?

According to our itinerary, the ideal time for the photography would be in the afternoon or early evening after the third day's sightseeing. Lhasa experiences longer daylight hours, typically getting dark around 9 PM. Shooting during the late afternoon or early evening allows for optimal use of natural light, capturing various angles in the photos. If time permits, nighttime photography is also an option, especially in places like Barkhor Street, capturing the essence of Lhasa's nightlife in your pictures.

  • 8. What to pack for traveling to Lhasa in Tibet?

    1) Clothing: Lhasa enjoys abundant sunshine throughout the year, yet has a significant temperature difference between day and night. So it's advisable to bring a warm jacket or coat regardless of when you visit to stay protected from the cold. Generally, light clothing suffices in summer, while in spring and autumn, at least three layers are recommended (base layer, sweater, outerwear). In winter, windproof outerwear is necessary. Layering allows for adjusting clothing according to temperature changes. Additionally, due to strong UV rays in Tibet, sunglasses and hats are essential.

    2) Personal Care Products: Skincare essentials such as facial cleanser, moisturizer, lotion, hydrating face masks, body lotion, lip balm, and sunscreen. Also, carry a thermos to ensure access to hot water anytime.

    3) Common Medications: Band-Aids, motion sickness medicine, cold medicine, gastrointestinal medication, anti-inflammatory drugs, eye drops, high-altitude sickness medication, and other necessary medications should be carried for emergencies. (Please adhere to medical advice and avoid excessive medication use.)

    4) Electronic Devices: Bring necessary electronic devices such as phone, camera, earphones, and chargers, including power banks and charging cables.

    5) Minimal Cash and Bank Cards: Though mobile payment is widespread in Lhasa, some places might still require cash payments. It's advisable to carry a small amount of cash and at least one bank card for your travel needs.
