What Is the Mount Kailash Kora and Why is It Sacred?

The Mount Kailash Kora is a sacred circumambulation, or pilgrimage walk, around Mount Kailash in western Tibet. For centuries, pilgrims have traveled here to complete this spiritual journey, believing that performing the Kora can help purify negative karma and accumulate spiritual merit.

Mount Kailash is considered sacred in Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Bon. For Tibetan Buddhists, it is associated with Demchok (Chakrasamvara), while Hindus regard it as the abode of Lord Shiva. Jains and followers of Bon also connect the mountain with important religious traditions.

Today, the Kora attracts both devoted pilgrims and travelers seeking a unique combination of Tibetan culture, spiritual traditions, and high-altitude adventure.

What's the Difference Between Inner Kora and Outer Kora?

There are two main pilgrimage routes associated with Mount Kailash: the Outer Kora and Inner Kora. Although both are sacred journeys, they follow different paths and have different religious significance, trekking challenges, and access conditions.

The Outer Kora is the classic pilgrimage circuit around Mount Kailash, covering approximately 52 km over three days. The Inner Kora, traditionally associated with pilgrims who have completed 13 Outer Koras, follows a more demanding route closer to Mount Kailash's southern face, passing sacred sites near Selung Monastery and Nandi Parvat.

FeatureOuter KoraInner Kora
Route Circles Mount Kailash via Dirapuk, Dolma La Pass, and Zutulpuk Approaches the southern face through the Selung and Nandi Parvat area

Difficulty Challenging high-altitude trek Extremely challenging, with steep, rocky terrain

For travelers planning a Mount Kailash Kora in 2027, the Outer Kora is the standard and recommended route. It offers the traditional pilgrimage experience with established trekking stages and basic accommodation along the way.

The Inner Kora is a more specialized pilgrimage that is not generally open to tourists. If you're interested in this route, please check with us about the latest access restrictions before making your travel plans.

Mount Kailash Kora Route: 3-Day Trekking Itinerary

The Mount Kailash Outer Kora is a roughly 52-kilometer (32-mile) pilgrimage circuit around the sacred mountain, starting and ending in Darchen. Most travelers complete the trek in three days, with overnight stays near Dirapuk and Zutulpuk monasteries.

On our Kailash kora tours, an eco-bus transfer on the first day reduces the total walking distance to approximately 49 km (30 miles). Along the way, you will trek through remote mountain valleys, enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kailash from different angles, and cross Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest point of the route.

Here is an overview of the 3-day Mount Kailash Kora trek route:

DayTrekking RouteWalking DistanceMain Highlight
Day 1 Darchen – Sarshung – Dirapuk Approx. 13 km Views of Mount Kailash's west and north faces
Day 2 Dirapuk – Dolma La Pass – Zutulpuk Approx. 24 km Crossing Dolma La Pass
Day 3 Zutulpuk – Darchen Approx. 12 km Completing the sacred Kora

Note: Walking distances are approximate and based on our standard tour arrangements.

Day 1: Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery

The first day of the Mount Kailash Kora begins in Darchen (around 4,560 m), the gateway to the sacred mountain. On our tours, you first take an eco-bus to Sarshung Village, where your 13-km trek officially begins.

The trail follows a gradual ascent through the wide Lha Chu Valley. Along the way, you pass mani walls and colorful prayer flags while enjoying picturesque views of Mount Kailash's west face.

Upon arrival, you will stay overnight in a basic guesthouse near Dirapuk Monastery. Weather permitting, you can enjoy spectacular sunset views of Mount Kailash's north face, one of the most memorable sights of the entire Kora.

Day 2: Dirapuk to Zutulpuk via Dolma La Pass

Day 2 is the most challenging part of the Mount Kailash Kora. Starting early from Dirapuk, you follow a steep, rocky trail uphill to Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest point of the entire trek. Colorful prayer flags mark the pass, which holds deep spiritual significance for Tibetan pilgrims.

After crossing the pass, you descend along a steep trail past the sacred Gauri Kund Lake (Lake of Compassion). The terrain then gradually opens into a wider, gentler valley, making the remaining walk easier as you continue toward Zutulpuk Monastery.

You will spend the night in a basic guesthouse near Zutulpuk Monastery, resting after the most physically demanding day of the Kora.

Day 3: Zutulpuk Monastery to Darchen

The final day is generally easier, following a gentler trail through a peaceful valley as you gradually descend toward Darchen. Along the way, you can enjoy the vast landscapes of western Tibet and reflect on your journey around Mount Kailash.

After approximately 12 km of trekking, you return to Darchen, completing your three-day Mount Kailash Kora.

How Difficult Is the Mount Kailash Kora?

The Mount Kailash Kora is a challenging but rewarding high-altitude trek. You don't need technical climbing skills, but good fitness, proper acclimatization, and preparation will help you feel more comfortable and confident along the way.

High Altitude and Physical Challenges

The high altitude of Mount Kailash is the main challenge of the Kora. Most of the route lies above 4,500 meters, where the thinner air can make even simple uphill walking feel more tiring than usual.

The second day is particularly demanding, with around 24 km of walking, including steep climbs and rocky descents. Cold temperatures, wind, and changing mountain weather can also add to the challenge.

Can Beginners Complete the Mount Kailash Kora?

Yes, first-time trekkers can complete the Mount Kailash Kora with good preparation. You don't need previous mountaineering experience, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven terrain.

Before your trip, regular hiking, long walks, and uphill training can help build your stamina. Allow enough time to acclimatize, and remember that even experienced hikers can feel the effects of high altitude.

Can You Hire a Horse, Yak, or Porter for the Kora?

Yes, trekking support is available during the Mount Kailash Kora, helping you carry less weight or reduce the physical effort on certain sections.

  • Porters can carry personal luggage, allowing you to walk with a lighter daypack.
  • Yaks are mainly used to transport luggage and supplies along permitted sections of the route.
  • Horses may be available for riding on certain sections, although some steep or difficult parts still need to be completed on foot.

These services usually cost extra. If you need a horse, yak, or porter, please let us know in advance or speak with your guide upon arrival in Darchen, so we can help arrange suitable support based on your needs and local availability.

Best Time for Mount Kailash Kora in 2027

The best time for the Mount Kailash Kora in 2027 is from May to October. Whether you prefer pleasant trekking weather, clear mountain views, or a special pilgrimage experience, each season offers something different. Here's what to expect.

May to June: Pleasant Weather for Spring Trekking

  • Best for: Travelers seeking relatively dry weather and a spring pilgrimage experience.

May and June are among the best months for the Mount Kailash Kora, as temperatures gradually rise and trekking conditions become more favorable. Daytime temperatures around Darchen generally range from 10°C to 18°C, although mornings and nights remain much colder.

May usually brings relatively dry weather, clear skies, and fewer visitors than the main summer season. However, snow or ice may still be present around Dolma La Pass, particularly early in the season. By June, milder daytime temperatures make trekking more comfortable, while the Saga Dawa period brings a special pilgrimage atmosphere.

July to August: Warmer Weather and Popular Trekking Season

  • Best for: Travelers who prefer warmer days and greener summer landscapes.

July and August are the warmest months around Mount Kailash, with daytime temperatures around Darchen often reaching 15°C to 20°C. The mountain valleys become greener, offering beautiful summer scenery across the Tibetan Plateau.

July and August also bring more rainfall, often in the form of short afternoon or evening showers. There are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy beautiful views of Mount Kailash along the way. Keep in mind that even in summer, temperatures around Dolma La Pass can sometimes drop to freezing or below.

September to October: Clearer Skies and Mountain Views

  • Best for: Travelers seeking clearer mountain views and autumn photography opportunities.

September and early October are excellent times to enjoy clear views of Mount Kailash. As the summer rains ease, the skies are often clearer, providing beautiful mountain scenery and excellent photography opportunities.

Daytime temperatures around Darchen generally range from 5°C to 15°C during this period. September is usually milder, while October brings colder mornings and nights, with an increasing possibility of snow or ice at higher elevations.

Saga Dawa Festival 2027: A Special Time for Kailash Kora

  • Best for: Travelers interested in Tibetan pilgrimage culture and a more meaningful spiritual experience.

Saga Dawa is one of the most significant pilgrimage periods for the Mount Kailash Kora. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing into nirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha. Tibetan pilgrims believe that religious practices and acts of devotion during this sacred period bring greater spiritual merit.

In 2027, the main day of the Saga Dawa Festival is expected to fall on June 18. Around this time, Mount Kailash attracts pilgrims who come to perform the Kora, pray, and take part in traditional religious activities. For travelers, it is a special opportunity to experience Tibet's living pilgrimage traditions alongside local pilgrims.

As this is a popular pilgrimage period, we recommend planning your 2027 Saga Dawa Kailash tour well in advance, especially if you want your trekking dates to coincide with the festival. Please check with us for the latest festival dates, local arrangements, and tour availability before booking.

  • Warm Tip:

Winter and early spring are generally not recommended for the Mount Kailash Kora due to extreme cold, heavy snow, and limited local services. Trekking conditions in late April depend on the weather and local arrangements.

How to Plan Your Mount Kailash Kora Tour in 2027

Planning a Mount Kailash Kora tour in 2027 involves more than the three-day trek. You'll also need to choose your starting point, allow time for acclimatization, and find the right tour for your needs.

Choose Your Route: From Lhasa or Kathmandu

There are two common starting points for a Mount Kailash journey: Lhasa in Tibet and Kathmandu in Nepal. The best choice depends on your travel schedule, preferred sightseeing experiences, and available transport connections.

Starting from Lhasa is an excellent option, especially for first-time visitors to Tibet. You can spend the first few days exploring Lhasa while adjusting to the altitude before traveling west toward Mount Kailash. Along the way, you can visit some of Tibet's classic highlights, including Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse, Everest Base Camp, and Lake Manasarovar.

Starting from Kathmandu can be convenient if you are already traveling in Nepal or want to combine Tibet and Nepal in one trip. However, flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa may not operate daily, and overland border crossings can sometimes be affected by weather or temporary restrictions. It's best to check with us about the latest transport and border arrangements before planning your 2027 journey.

For first-time visitors, we generally recommend starting from Lhasa, as it allows more time to acclimatize gradually and enjoy Tibet's remarkable high-altitude landscapes along the way.

Enjoy Mount Everest up close at Tibet Everest Base Camp Our Lhasa to Mount Kailash route will pass through classic attractions such as Tibet Everest Base Camp.

How Many Days Do You Need for a Kailash Kora Tour?

Although the Mount Kailash Kora itself takes just three days, a complete tour usually takes 10 to 17 days. You will need to allow time for arrival and acclimatization, travel to Darchen, sightseeing, the three-day trek, and return or onward journey.

Here are some popular Mount Kailash itineraries to help you plan your 2027 trip:

For first-time visitors, we recommend the 15-day Lhasa to Mount Kailash route, which offers a good balance of acclimatization, sightseeing, and the three-day Mount Kailash Kora. If you have more time or special interests, we can also help tailor your journey.

Choose Between a Group Tour and a Private Kailash Tour

Both small group tours and private tours are available for travelers planning a Mount Kailash Kora in 2027.

A small group tour is ideal if you are traveling solo, as a couple, or on a budget. You can join other travelers on a scheduled departure, share transport and guide services, and enjoy the experience of completing the Mount Kailash Kora together.

A private Kailash tour offers greater flexibility with travel dates, sightseeing stops, accommodation preferences, and the overall itinerary. It's a good choice for families, groups of friends, or travelers looking for a more personalized Mount Kailash experience.

Whether you choose a small group or private tour, our experienced local Tibetan team will be there to support you every step of the way, helping you enjoy a smooth and memorable Mount Kailash journey.

What Permits Do You Need for Mount Kailash in 2027?

The main travel permits include:

  • Tibet Travel Permit: Required for international travelers entering Tibet.
  • Alien's Travel Permit: Required for visiting certain restricted areas, including Mount Kailash.
  • Military Area Entry Permit & Foreign Affairs Permit: Required for travel to military-sensitive areas such as Mount Kailash and other areas of Ngari.

How Much Does a Mount Kailash Kora Tour Cost in 2027?

The cost of a Mount Kailash Kora tour in 2027 depends mainly on your itinerary, travel season, group size, and whether you choose a small group or private tour.

Group Tour vs. Private Tour Costs

Our popular 15-day Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar small group tour costs USD 2,219–2,479 per person in 2027, depending on the travel season. The tour includes the classic three-day Kora, Everest Base Camp, and other highlights along the route.

For the same or a similar itinerary, a private Mount Kailash tour generally costs more per person than a small group tour, as transportation, guide services, and other expenses are shared only among your own group. The price per person also depends on your group size, with larger groups usually enjoying lower per-person costs.

What's Included in the Tour Price and What Costs Extra?

The price of our Mount Kailash tours covers most of your major travel expenses within Tibet, including accommodation, local transportation, local guide services, travel permits, and sightseeing arrangements specified in the itinerary.

However, some expenses are not included in the tour price, so it's worth allowing a little extra in your budget for the following:

  • Flights or trains to Lhasa or Kathmandu before your Mount Kailash tour, and return travel after the tour.
  • Chinese visa fees, if applicable.
  • Meals not included in your itinerary.
  • Single-room supplement for small group tours, if you prefer a private room.
  • Porters, yaks, or horses if you need extra support during the Kora.
  • Tips for your Tibetan guide and driver.
  • Personal expenses, such as snacks, drinks, and souvenirs.

We recommend checking the inclusions and exclusions of your chosen tour before booking, so you know exactly what is covered and what to budget for separately.

When Should You Book Your 2027 Kailash Kora Tour?

Our 2027 Mount Kailash tour departures begin on April 25. To arrange the required Tibet travel permits, please contact us at least one month before your trip.

However, we recommend planning and booking your tour a few months in advance, especially during popular travel periods such as the Saga Dawa Festival, July to August, and late September to early October. Booking early gives you more choices for departure dates, hotels, and flights, as well as a better chance of finding good deals on accommodation and airfare.

You can also save 5% by booking at least three months ahead on selected Mount Kailash tours. If your travel dates are flexible, consider traveling in April, May, or late October, when tour prices are generally lower than during the peak season.

Travelers completing the Mount Kailash Kora Booking early gives you more choice of departure dates for your Mount Kailash journey.

Essential Tips for Your 2027 Mount Kailash Kora

Based on our experience organizing Mount Kailash tours, here are five practical tips to help you prepare for your 2027 Mount Kailash Kora.

1. Choose a Route That Gives You Time to Acclimatize
If this is your first trip to Tibet, we recommend starting from Lhasa, where you can spend a few days adjusting to the altitude before traveling west toward Mount Kailash. Our classic 15-day tour is designed to give you more time to acclimatize along the way.

2. Prepare for the Long-Distance Trekking
The Mount Kailash Kora involves three days of trekking at high altitude, with long walks and some steep, rocky trails. Even experienced hikers may find walking for several hours each day tiring.

Before your trip, build your stamina with regular long walks and uphill hikes to get used to walking on consecutive days. Comfortable, well-worn hiking boots and trekking poles can also make a big difference.

3. Dress in Layers for Changing Mountain Weather
Weather around Mount Kailash can change quickly, even during the summer trekking season. Dress in layers so you can easily adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day.

Bring thermal clothing, a warm fleece or down jacket, a waterproof outer layer, gloves, and a warm hat. Sun protection is also important, so don't forget sunglasses, sunscreen, and a sun hat. Keep your warm and waterproof layers handy, especially when crossing Dolma La Pass.

4. Arrange Trekking Support in Advance
If you think you might need a horse, yak, or porter, let us know before your trip or speak with your guide before reaching Darchen. We'll help arrange suitable support based on your needs and local availability. Keep in mind that some sections of the Kora still need to be completed on foot.

5. Keep Your Guide Informed During the Kora
Walk at your own pace and take breaks whenever you need to. There's no need to rush or keep up with faster trekkers. If you feel unwell or have any concerns, let your guide know as soon as possible.

Your Tibetan guide will be there to support you throughout the trek and help arrange medical assistance or a descent to a lower altitude if needed. Travel insurance is also included in your tour package for added peace of mind.

FAQs About Mount Kailash Kora in 2027

Q1: Can Foreign Tourists Do the Mount Kailash Kora in 2027?

Yes, foreign tourists can visit Mount Kailash and complete the three-day Kora in 2027. You'll need to join an organized tour with a local travel agency, as independent travel is not allowed.

When you book with us, we'll take care of your travel permits and tour arrangements. We'll also keep you updated on any local changes and help adjust your itinerary if needed, so you can enjoy your Mount Kailash journey with less to worry about.

Q2: Can I Visit Mount Kailash Without Doing the Kora?

Yes. You can visit the Mount Kailash area and enjoy views of the sacred mountain without completing the three-day trek.

Our team can help arrange a suitable itinerary that includes Mount Kailash and nearby Lake Manasarovar, with sightseeing based around Darchen and other accessible viewpoints.

Q3: Can Older Travelers Complete the Mount Kailash Kora?

Yes, there is no age limit for the Mount Kailash Kora. Every year, we welcome travelers in their 60s and even 70s who come to visit Mount Kailash. With our experienced Tibetan guides and trekking support, many have successfully completed the Kora.

However, your health, fitness, and ability to handle high altitude matter more than your age. We recommend consulting your doctor before the trip, especially if you have any existing medical conditions, and allowing plenty of time to acclimatize.

Q4: Can I Do the Mount Kailash Kora in Winter?

No, the Mount Kailash Kora is not available during the winter months. Heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and icy trails make trekking unsafe, especially around Dolma La Pass. Most local hotels, guesthouses, and trekking support services also close for the winter season.

We recommend planning your Kora between May and October, when weather conditions are more suitable and local travel services are operating.

Q5: What Happens if I Cannot Finish the Kora?

If you feel unwell or find the trek too difficult, don't worry about keeping up or finishing the Kora. Just let your guide know as soon as possible.

Our experienced Tibetan guides will put your safety first, help you assess the situation, and arrange suitable assistance based on your needs. Whether that means taking a rest, getting medical help, or returning to a lower altitude, we'll do our best to make sure you're well looked after throughout the journey.

Q6: Are There Toilets and Guesthouses Along the Kora Route?

Yes, there are basic guesthouses at Dirapuk and Zutulpuk, where you'll stay overnight during the three-day Kora. They provide beds and warm blankets for a comfortable night's rest, although rooms have no private bathrooms or air conditioning, and electricity is limited.

Toilet facilities are basic, with squat toilets at the guesthouses and simple outdoor pit toilets along the Kora route. Toilets may not be available at every stop, so bring tissues, hand sanitizer, and personal toiletries. A power bank and warm sleeping bag will also help make your overnight stays more comfortable.

Q7: Is There Mobile Phone Signal During the Mount Kailash Kora?

Yes, mobile network coverage is available along the Mount Kailash Kora, although signal strength and stability can vary. You'll generally find network coverage at the guesthouses and food tents along the route, where Alipay and WeChat Pay are also commonly accepted.

However, we recommend carrying some cash in case the signal is weak or mobile payments don't work. This will make it easier to buy food, drinks, or other essentials during the trek.

Q8: Can I Visit Lake Manasarovar on the Same Tour?

Yes, Lake Manasarovar is included in many Mount Kailash tour itineraries, including our popular 15-day Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar small group tour.

On our classic tour, you'll visit Lake Manasarovar after completing the three-day Kora. If you prefer a private tour, we can also customize your itinerary to visit the lake either before or after the trek, depending on your travel plans and interests.
