Plan My Tibet Journey

Sonam Tenphel

Hi, I’m Sonam Tenphel, a Tibetan guide and photographer with 25 years of local experience across Lhasa, Everest, Mount Kailash, and remote Tibet. With knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism, art, architecture, high-altitude travel, trekking, and photography, I share practical, firsthand insights from my own journeys.

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are among the most remarkable destinations in western Tibet. The region offers spectacular mountain scenery and lake views, but its high-altitude weather can be unpredictable, even during the warmer months.

Strong sunshine, cold nights, high winds, and sudden snowfall can all affect your journey. However, favorable weather can bring clear mountain views and enjoyable conditions for exploring the region.

So, when is the best time to visit Kailash Mansarovar, and what kind of weather should you expect? This guide covers the weather at Kailash Mansarovar throughout the year, including monthly temperatures, seasonal conditions, the best months to visit, and practical tips to help you prepare for your journey.

What Is the Weather Like at Kailash Mansarovar Overall?

Located in the Ngari region of western Tibet, Kailash Mansarovar has a cold, dry, high-altitude climate, with long, freezing winters and short, relatively mild summers. Even during the warmer months, temperatures can drop sharply after sunset, and the weather can change quickly.

The region's high elevation is a major reason for its harsh weather. Lake Manasarovar lies at about 4,590 meters above sea level, while Darchen, the starting point of the Mount Kailash Kora, is around 4,670 meters. The trekking route climbs even higher, reaching approximately 5,630 meters at Dolma La Pass.

Due to the high altitude, you can expect several typical weather conditions:

  • Large temperature differences: Sunny afternoons may feel comfortable, but nights and early mornings can be freezing.
  • Strong sunshine and UV radiation: The thin atmosphere at high altitude makes sun protection essential.
  • Strong winds: Open valleys, lakeshores, and mountain passes can be particularly windy.
  • Sudden weather changes: Clear skies can quickly give way to clouds, rain, snow, or strong winds.
  • Limited rainfall: Much of the year is relatively dry, although precipitation increases during the summer monsoon.

Weather conditions also vary across the region. The shores of Lake Manasarovar may be sunny and relatively calm, while higher sections of the Mount Kailash Kora experience freezing winds or snowfall. Therefore, you should prepare for both sunshine and winter-like conditions, regardless of when you travel.

Kailash Mansarovar Weather in Different Seasons

Spring (April to May): Cold but Gradually Warming

Spring is a time of transition at Kailash Mansarovar. Temperatures begin to rise after the long winter, making daytime outdoor activities more comfortable. However, spring weather is not always predictable. Strong winds, sudden snowfall, and freezing temperatures are still possible.

In April, days are still cold, and nighttime temperatures often fall well below freezing. The Mount Kailash Kora usually reopens around late April, depending on weather and trail conditions. However, snow and ice may still cover parts of the route, especially around Dolma La Pass, making trekking more challenging.

By May, the weather usually becomes warmer and relatively dry. Clear skies can offer beautiful views of Mount Kailash and the surrounding mountains. Late May can be a good time to visit Kailash Mansarovar, as trekking conditions generally improve.

Summer (June to August): Warmer Weather and Monsoon Rain

Summer is the warmest season at Kailash Mansarovar. From June to August, daytime temperatures become more comfortable, although nights remain cold.

June often provides a good balance of relatively warm weather and manageable rainfall. It is one of the most popular months for the Mount Kailash Kora. The Saga Dawa Festival may also fall in June, when pilgrims gather to complete the sacred kora, creating a special pilgrimage atmosphere.

July and August bring the summer monsoon. Rain often falls in the evening or at night and usually does not last long, so daytime sightseeing can often continue as planned. However, occasional clouds may limit views of Mount Kailash and the surrounding mountains.

Autumn (September to October): Clear Skies and Colder Nights

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons to visit Kailash Mansarovar. As the summer monsoon weakens, rainfall generally decreases, and the skies often become clearer. This makes autumn a great time to enjoy views of Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, and the surrounding Himalayan landscapes.

September is especially attractive for travelers who want clear mountain scenery and relatively dry trekking conditions. However, temperatures begin to fall quickly after sunset. Nights can be freezing, especially at higher elevations along the Kailash Kora.

Early October may still offer excellent visibility, but the weather becomes noticeably colder. This is usually one of the last chances of the year to complete the Mount Kailash Kora before the winter closure. Snowfall and icy conditions become more likely as the month progresses.

Winter (November to March): Freezing Weather and Heavy Snow

Winter is the harshest season at Kailash Mansarovar. From November to March, temperatures often fall below freezing, especially at night. Strong winds, snow, and icy conditions make outdoor activities difficult.

During winter, the Mount Kailash Kora is generally closed to tourists because of dangerous trekking conditions. Accommodation and other tourist services around the route may also be unavailable.

Lake Manasarovar also experiences freezing winter conditions. Ice usually begins to form along the lakeshore in November. By January and February, much of the lake's surface may be covered with ice, creating a spectacular frozen landscape. However, strong winds and freezing temperatures make lakeside visits challenging.

Despite the beautiful winter scenery, winter is not recommended for a typical Kailash Mansarovar tour, especially if your main goal is to complete the kora. For a safer and more comfortable journey, it is better to visit during the main travel season.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Kailash Mansarovar?

The best time to visit Kailash Mansarovar is generally from May to June and September to early October. These periods often provide relatively dry weather, clearer mountain views, and more favorable conditions for sightseeing and trekking.

May to June: Mild Weather and Less Rainfall

From May to June, temperatures gradually rise, and the days become longer. The weather is often relatively dry, offering good conditions for visiting Lake Manasarovar and enjoying views of Mount Kailash.

May is particularly appealing if you prefer cooler weather and want to experience the beginning of the pilgrimage season. June generally brings warmer daytime temperatures, making walking and outdoor sightseeing more comfortable. However, you should still prepare for freezing nights and possible snow at Dolma La Pass.

The famous Saga Dawa Festival is also celebrated around this time, depending on the Tibetan lunar calendar. During the festival, pilgrims gather around Mount Kailash to take part in religious activities and the sacred kora.

Mount Kailash Kora trek in May May offers clear mountain views and crisp air for trekking around Mount Kailash.

September to Early October: Clear Skies and Beautiful Mountain Views

September to early October is another excellent period for visiting Kailash Mansarovar. After the summer monsoon, the air is often clearer, offering better views of the surrounding mountains. This makes autumn particularly appealing for photography and enjoying the mountain scenery.

This period usually offers a good balance of relatively dry weather and manageable daytime temperatures. Daytime temperatures range from about 10–15°C in September to 5–10°C in October. Nights are much colder, often falling below freezing, especially along the high-altitude kora route.

If you want to admire the distinctive shape of Mount Kailash or enjoy peaceful views of Lake Manasarovar, this can be a rewarding time to visit. Generally, September is the better choice, while early October can still be a good option if weather and access conditions remain favorable.

What Is the Weather Like During the Mount Kailash Kora?

The Mount Kailash Kora is one of the most memorable experiences in western Tibet. This sacred pilgrimage route covers approximately 52 kilometers and usually takes three days to complete.

However, the weather along the kora route can be much colder and more unpredictable than the weather around Lake Manasarovar. This is mainly due to the high elevation of the trekking route.

On the first day, you trek from Darchen toward Dirapuk Monastery. The route passes through open valleys where strong sunshine and cold winds are common. Even if the afternoon feels relatively warm, temperatures can drop sharply after sunset.

The second day is the most challenging part of the kora. You cross Dolma La Pass, the highest point of the route. At this elevation, freezing temperatures, strong winds, snow, and icy trails are possible even in summer. Weather conditions can change quickly, making this section particularly demanding.

On the final day, you trek from Zutulpuk back toward Darchen. As the route descends, temperatures may rise slightly, but you should still prepare for strong sunshine, wind, and sudden weather changes.

Dolma La Pass Cold Weather Prayer flags flutter at Dolma La Pass, the Kora’s highest point, where freezing temperatures require warm layers.

How Does the Weather Affect Lake Manasarovar Visits?

Lake Manasarovar lies at approximately 4,590 meters above sea level, south of Mount Kailash. Unlike the demanding Mount Kailash Kora, visiting Lake Manasarovar usually involves sightseeing, photography, and short walks along the lakeshore. However, the high-altitude weather can still affect your visit.

May to June and September to early October are generally good periods for visiting Lake Manasarovar, especially if you want clear mountain views and relatively dry weather. On clear days, the lake's blue waters contrast beautifully with the surrounding mountains, and Mount Kailash may be visible in the distance.

However, strong winds are common around the open lakeshore. Even when the sunshine feels warm, the wind can make it feel much colder. During July and August, increased cloud cover and occasional rain may affect visibility.

In winter, much of the lake's surface remains frozen for long periods, so we do not recommend visiting during this season.

Practical Weather Tips for Planning a Kailash Mansarovar Tour

Check the Latest Weather and Access Conditions

Weather conditions around Mount Kailash can change quickly, especially at higher elevations. Before your trip, check the latest weather forecasts and official access information. Snowfall may affect roads, trekking trails, and access to the Mount Kailash Scenic Area.

For example, an official announcement confirmed that the Mount Kailash Scenic Area would close starting October 20, 2026, following heavy snowfall and ice accumulation. The reopening date for 2027 has not yet been announced.

Allow Time for Altitude Acclimatization

Altitude is another important consideration when planning your Kailash Mansarovar tour, as much of the region lies above 4,500 meters. At these elevations, lower oxygen availability can make physical activity more difficult and increase the risk of altitude sickness.

It is generally advisable to spend your first two or three days in Lhasa acclimatizing before continuing toward western Tibet. During this time, get plenty of rest, stay well hydrated, and eat light meals. Avoid alcohol and strenuous physical activities, especially during the first few days at high altitude.

If you experience a persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual fatigue, inform your guide and seek medical advice. Do not continue ascending if you develop symptoms of altitude sickness.

Prepare for Strong Sunshine and Cold Winds

Strong sunshine is common at Kailash Mansarovar, even when the air temperature is low. UV rays are also intense at high altitudes. Always carry sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and a windproof jacket. Remember to reapply sunscreen regularly to keep your skin protected.

Keep Your Itinerary Flexible

Unpredictable weather can affect your travel plans in remote western Tibet. Heavy snowfall may make mountain passes unsafe, while rain or poor road conditions may cause delays.

If you plan to complete the Mount Kailash Kora, it is best to keep your itinerary flexible when possible. Your guide may recommend adjusting the trekking schedule or waiting for better conditions.
