  The overland journey from Lhasa to Shigatse is a popular route known for its stunning scenery. It takes about 6 to 8 hours to cover roughly 360 kilometers. Along the way, you can stop at Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, and the historic Gyantse town.

  Alternatively, the train from Lhasa to Shigatse is faster, taking around 2.5 hours. It departs twice daily, at approximately 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The ride is comfortable and relaxing, with beautiful views of the Tibetan plateau along the way.

• When is the best time to visit Shigatse, Tibet?

  The best time to visit Shigatse is from May to October. During these months, the weather is generally mild, sunny, and comfortable for travel. The skies are often clear, making it a great time for sightseeing, photography, and visiting high-altitude places like Mount Everest Base Camp.

  Spring (May to June) and autumn (September to October) are especially ideal, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer (July and August) is warmer but can bring occasional rain.

  Traveling during this period also means better road conditions and access to remote areas, making your journey smoother and more enjoyable.

• What is the altitude of Shigatse? Will I get altitude sickness?

  Shigatse sits at an altitude of about 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) above sea level. At this elevation, some travelers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath.

  It is recommended to spend a few days acclimatizing in Lhasa (3,650 meters) before traveling to Shigatse. Staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol, eating lightly, and resting well can help reduce symptoms.
