Xining Tibet Train Tour FAQs & Travel Tips

  • What travel documents do I need for the Xining Tibet train tour?

Firstly, you need to obtain a Chinese Visa before traveling to Xining. This can be applied for in your home country. The good news is that if you are from a visa-free country such as Australia, Germany, France, Italy and Malaysia, you can stay for up to 15 days within China, including the Tibetan Autonomous Region, without a visa.

To enter Tibet from Xining, you also need a Tibet Travel Permit in order to board the Xining–Lhasa train. We will assist you in obtaining this permit with copies of your Chinese Visa and passport. Please contact us at least 20 days in advance to avoid any delays in the application process.

Furthermore, if you plan to travel beyond Lhasa, such as to Everest Base Camp or Mount Kailash, additional documents like the Alien’s Travel Permit and Military Permit are required. No worries - our Tibetan guide will help you secure all the necessary documents before you begin your journey.

  • When is the best time to take the Tibet train to Lhasa?

The best time to take the Tibet train is from April to October. During these months, the weather is mild, the skies are clearer, and the landscapes along the Qinghai–Tibet Railway are at their most beautiful. You’ll see vast grasslands, snow-capped mountains, and sparkling lakes along the way.

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are especially recommended because of the comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer (June–August) is also a good choice, offering lush scenery, though it tends to be the busiest travel season.

Winter (November–March) is the off-season. While it’s colder, you can still enjoy fewer tourists and lower prices, with snowy views of the plateau adding a unique charm.

  • Will I suffer altitude sickness if I take the Tibet train?

Yes, there is a chance you may experience mild altitude sickness, since the train crosses several high mountain passes above 4,000 meters before reaching Lhasa at 3,650 meters. Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, or shortness of breath.

The good news is that the Tibet train is specially designed for high-altitude travel. Each cabin is equipped with an oxygen supply system to help ease discomfort, and you can also use personal oxygen outlets if needed. Since the train climbs gradually, it gives your body more time to adjust compared to flying directly to Lhasa, which helps reduce the risk of severe altitude sickness.

To stay comfortable, it’s best to rest well, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and keep a relaxed pace during the first day or two in Lhasa.

  • What can I eat aboard the Xining–Lhasa train?

The train offers a dining car with set meals, usually a mix of Chinese-style dishes such as rice, vegetables, and meat. Prices are higher than on land, but the food is freshly prepared.

In addition, trolley carts pass through the cabins selling simple snacks, instant noodles, bread, eggs, and drinks. Hot water is always available on the train, so many travelers bring their own instant noodles, tea, or coffee for convenience.

If you prefer more variety, you can also prepare some snacks or light meals before boarding in Xining.

  • Can I have a shower in the Tibet train?

There are no showering facilities in the train. You may bring your toiletries and clean yourself at the basin beside the restroom. The boiled water dispenser can also be found nearby.

  • Is Wifi available on the Tibet train?

So far, there is no free Wifi access in Tibet train. But as you arrive in China, you may buy a SIM card with 4G/5G for your smart phone. Then you can enjoy fast internet access throughout your journey from Xining to Lhasa.
